Conditions We Treat
AOM is more than 2500 years old. In that time, just about any disease you can think of has been discovered, diagnosed, and treated using AOM. Having said that, AOM is not always the best choice. AOM can diagnose and treat nearly any non-emergency condition. In cases where drugs and surgery are necessary, AOM is used to counteract the negative effects they nearly always include. For most diseases, AOM is a viable option for treatment and cure. In most cases, your primary care physician will have no problem with you trying to cure your problem naturally before undergoing more invasive or risky therapies. It is always a good idea to keep all of your healthcare providers informed of other treatments you are undergoing. We are fortunate that acupuncture in Spokane is provided by professionals who are an integral part of our health care community.
Motor Vehicle Accident Injuries
Motor vehicle crashes are one of the leading causes of death in the U.S. More than 2.3 million adult drivers and passengers were treated in emergency departments as the result of being injured in motor vehicle crashes in 2009. The economic impact is also notable: the lifetime costs of crash-related deaths and injuries among drivers and passengers were $70 billion in 2005.
ACUPUNCTURE IS COVERED BY YOUR PERSONAL INJURY PROTECTION - NO REFERRAL NECESSARY.
Injuries from motor vehicle accidents (MVA) include many types of soft-tissue injuries that can be debilitating. Often times, these injuries are not fully addressed in the initial treatments. In many cases...

Pain
Pain affects more than 86 million adults each year in our country. And it is the most common complaint in my practice.
Acupuncture is very well-understood when it comes to the subject of pain relief. Acupuncture stimulates the central nervous system in a specific way that helps the brain to properly locate the problem and deal with it. Also, acupuncture helps open up the brain's very powerful pharmacy to release natrual self-made painkillers that are thousands of times stronger than morphine.
Acupuncture and OM can treat just about any sort of pain whether it is from pinched nerves, sprains/strains, car accidents, injured muscles, or chronic tension.
Headaches
I treat A LOT of headache cases. Headaches have many causes. Though they aren't fully understood by modern medical science, acupuncture and Oriental medicine have a 2500 year headstart on diagnosing and treating headaches from a variety of causes. Almost any type of headache can be treated by AOM. I see mostly migraine and tension headache cases in my clinic. I also treat sinus headaches and a few other less-common types of headaches. Many people are resigned to having their chronic headaches for the rest of their life - that's crazy. Headaches affect everything you do. They affect your mood, your focus, your sleep, and your energy levels. AOM is great at treating headaches, and I welcome the opportunity to help you get over yours...
Dizziness and Vertigo
The first step in understanding your condition is to know what is causing your symptoms. For vertigo, you made need a visit to your primary care physician to rule out serious problems. We will start by clearly understanding what you are experiencing. Different diseases can cause slightly different sensations. You can feel dizzy, light headed, faint, like the room is spinning, like you are spinning, etc. Most of the most common diseases that cause vertigo are not serious and respond very well to acupuncture and Oriental medicine treatments...

Stress, Depression, and Anxiety
Anxiety, depression, and even just the feeling of being overwhelmed by day-to-day stress can leave you feeling isolated from the people and things you love. Pharmaceutical approaches have negative side-effects and are not well-supported by research evidence. Psychological issues can be difficult to diagnose and treat. Part of the problem is that there is no tangible diagnostic value to use. The myth of the "chemical imbalance" as a cause has come apart over the last several years.
Acupuncture and Oriental medicine have a 2500 year advantage. For all that time, AOM doctors have been observing and recording psychological patterns and how to treat them - what works and what doesn't. This sort of observational data is crucial in understanding psychological problems...

Cold and Flu

Colds and the Flu may seem like little more than a nuisance these days, but in ancient times, infectious diseases could wipeout entire villages. Our modern Chinese herbal medicine was born of a need to stop infectious epidemics that were killing thousands of people. Oriental medicine is, therefore, highly effective at treating the symptoms of infectious diseases as well as strengthening the body's own defenses to defeat the infectious agents and to prevent recurrence. Modern drug therapy merely masks the symptoms of a cold or flu - they do nothing to actually heal the body. Chinese herbal medicine along with acupuncture can limit an infection in both severity and duration, as well as provide immediate relief of symptoms. Regular visits to your AOM doctor will also keep you from getting as sick as often.
Poor Memory/Concentration
Most of the cases I see respond very well to addressing vitamin B deficiencies and mental health. By mental health, I mean stress management, anxiety, and depression. A poorly functioning mind may first show itself as memory problems, bad moods, poor focus and concentration, etc., but that is usually just the tip of the iceberg. AOM gets at the root of the problem and not only helps your memory, but also your mood, cognitive abilities, and overall sense of well-being. Poor memory is often addressed as a patients second or third main complaint, but it is actually a very important sign that your system is failing and needs to be addressed...

Insomnia
About 1 out every 20 Americans suffers from persistent insomnia. Insomnia is a big problem. Proper sleep is very important. Your body does a lot of its most important work during sleep – as does your mind. There are several theories from sleep researchers that try to explain why we sleep at all. The modern theory that is most congruent with Oriental medicine theory is the restorative theory, which says we sleep in order to repair and rest.
Heartburn/GERD
The mainstream medical approach to treating heartburn and GERD involves taking acid stopping drugs for as long as symptoms are present. Unfortunately, not only do these drugs fail to address the underlying cause of heartburn and GERD, they make it worse. This means that people who start taking acid stopping medications end up taking them for the rest of their lives.
This is a serious issue because acid-stopping drugs promote bacterial overgrowth, weaken our resistance to infection, reduce absorption of essential nutrients, and increase the likelihood of developing IBS, other digestive disorders, and cancer.
Acupuncture and Oriental medicine provide much safer and more effective treatments for GERD. Antacid medications only hide the problem.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Oriental medicine has a long history of treating what today we call IBS. As in many other diseases, the ancient Chinese physicians had it right when it came to IBS. The diagnosis in OM is basically that mind “overacts” on the digestive system causing dysregulation of digestion. And, as far as we know, that is exactly what happens. AOM for IBS is well researched. Treatment is very successful.
Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS)
RLS symptoms are well known in AOM. For more than 2500 years AOM doctors have been diagnosing and treating RLS. RLS symptoms are symptoms of an over-stressed mind. One distinct advantage AOM has over biomedicine is the understanding of how mental stress can affect our body. There are many ways for an over-stressed nervous system can manifest, and RLS is one of them. RLS responds very well to acupuncture and herbal therapies. Results are seen in the first few treatments. You should expect to come twice weekly for 2 weeks and once per week after that for 6-8 weeks, with continued herbal therapy for another 6-8 weeks. After that, acupuncture and herbal medicine are used as needed. In my practice patients usually get a good 6-9 months of relief, then come in just once or twice if symptoms return.

Stroke (CVA) Recovery
A stroke (CVA) occurs when the blood supply to part of your brain is interrupted or severely reduced, depriving brain tissue of oxygen and food. Within minutes, brain cells begin to die. A stroke is a medical emergency. Prompt treatment is crucial. Early action can minimize brain damage and potential complications. Acupuncture and Oriental medicine are proven treatments for recovering loss of motor and/or sensory function following a stroke.
Shingles Pain (neuralgia)

Acupuncture and OM outperform standard non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug(NSAID) therapy. NSAIDs are usually prescribed for shingles pain, but recent research has confirmed what doctors of OM and their patients have known for years. Acupuncture treatment does a better job at curing the neuralgia (nerve pain) associated with shingles without the nasty side effects of drugs.
